The 6 in red and black are the kids going to Ireland in October.
Early training is on hold until June but this summer will be filled with lots of training, conditioning and preparation for the Worlds.
Meanwhile, it is time to just be a kid!
Outdoors with friends, foraging, imagining, playing, learning. It is a good life.
We asked Sid to take the recyclables down to the end of the laneway. She came up with this idea on her own. Bungee cords and a bike makes the work load lighter!
Finally the back portion of our property dried up enough to mow and then super mow a racetrack in it. She was eager to go.
Fortunately there was still enough muck to make it fun.
She had a blast getting dirt everywhere and reportedly, even up her nose. Her driving is getting really good and bold, she has learned to lean into spin outs and actually did a donut in the mud puddle. We watch from a distance.
Her Herbal Apprenticeship program is a huge success. She brought us to her sitting spot where she sits and thinks and communes with nature. How suiting for it to be in a tree.
Sowing the seeds of the dandelion so we will have more greens for our salads.
Choir will soon come to the end for the summer but pick back up late August. On June 14th the kids are doing a benefit concert with award winning Canadian Singer Songwriter, Chris MacLean. It is a fundraiser for an Orphanage in Africa for children with HIV/AIDS. All the Sparrows are really excited about doing something to help other children. We are thankful for these kinds of opportunities.
Now this last section is a collection of friends we are finding in our backyard. Love catching them with my macro lens, it is an entire secret, beautiful world in our little two acres. Above is a June bug's undercarriage. Furry beast with googly eyes, I love them!

Peony predators. Look at the mandibles on the ant above. Below a drone/worker ant feeds the queen.
This is an Orange Belted Bumble bee on our weeping crab apple. I have never see an orange one before.

Baby deer fly. Love the eyes, in my hi-resolution copy of this pic you can see all the individual compound eyes. AMAZING.
I have never seen one of these in person before. It is a star nosed mole, found by Lilly. I rescued him from the J.O.D. (jaws of death). We had an entire science lesson about him and discovered some amazing things. For example, did you know that their nose has 22 finger like appendages that they use to feel with. They are able to smell under water by blowing air bubbles then sucking them back into their nose. The are the fastest eating mammal, they can detect and eat their prey in 120 milliseconds and have 44 teeth. Only the size of a hamster but absolutely amazing animals. Ok, that is science for the day, time to go back to school!
