What is a Shadouf? Is it a pair of cool shoes?

Perhaps it is a dog wearing an invisibility cloak?

And while is sounds like Skadoosh... the catch phrase Po the Panda uses in Kung Fu Panda, I have been assured by my 5 year old that Skadoosh and shadouf are two very different things.

This is a shadouf! It was a structure engineered to help draw water from the river by the first farmers. In our history book we learned about Nomads and early Egyptians and they used Shadoufs to help draw the water from the Nile for their crops. Last week Sid created her own version of the Nile and we planted seeds. We then worked on the engineering behind getting a properly balanced shadouf to water the fields.

First we discovered that the bucket floated. We then tried a measuring cup but it was scooping the wrong way and all the water poured out before getting to the field. Next we added a bit of weight to the bucket.

Aha! A perfect replica of a working shadouf (minus the plastic bucket and play dough).

In a previous post I mentioned http://www.thetoymaker.com/ and this week we cut out the dog show templates. These weren't nearly exciting enough as a dog show so Sid decided to make it an agility competition instead!

Everyone lined up and ready to go.

There was no Airedale so I had to make one! Here she is completing the jumps.

And finally the winners! What was so great about this is that we cut the dogs and trophies out together and then away went the imagination. Sid is still playing with her paper dogs. So cheap and so great for creativity!

A friend recommended a new nature spot so on Wednesday we went out to this amazing outdoor learning centre and accidentally found a beach! It was 22 degrees out and sunny. We couldn't have stumbled upon a more perfect picnic spot and we had it completely to ourselves.
Beach Kung Fu
Baywatch
The girls dipped their fingers and toes and snacked while the moms watched birds, basked in the sun and the silence of the day.

All kinds of children's stories in mp3. They can be downloaded or streamed. Fables, fairy tales, and old stories brought to life. Sid has been really enjoying the reading of Wizard of Oz!
This final picture is of Francine and her friend enjoying my bird sanctuary in the yard. Check out some of the pictures Francine took:
This picture I took, I called Bird Watcher, Watching Bird Watchers, Watching Bird
