A Beautiful Mess!

It was soooo chilly this week. Waking up in the morning to -41, - 39, -35.  Brrrrrrrr.  We consider ourselves very lucky because our vehicles started, our house stayed warm and we didn't have to spend a lot of time outside.  We also took advantage of the chilly temps to try a few fun things.  Messy is always fun!

I know, this looks harmless and non-messy.  Don't be fooled.  These balloons are little minions of mess waiting to change the colour of your skin, sink and counters.  First we put some food colouring inside the deflated balloons then we added water.   As much water as we were brave enough to fill them with.   One had a hole in it, one exploded in the container and sent water flying.  One I took off the tap before turning off the water.  What fun we had.  Oh and the food colouring was not as cooperative as I had hoped.
But worth every second of giggling and science fun.
It didn't take too long to freeze and the balloons split.  After some peeling we were left with these beautiful coloured ice balls.  We will be bringing them out to the snow fort to mark the path.
Another wonderful discovery and new favorite crafting medium is chalk pastels.  They blend, they are bright and beautiful and they are a bit messy.

But look at the results!!  Sid calls this work "Sunset in Botswana".  She is currently really into The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency so a lot of things in our world are all about Africa.
Oh and here Sid is getting geared up for the karate tournament tomorrow.  This is her homeschooling friend Tristan.  They do science club together now and even after a good spar, they are still friends the next day.

Will post about the tourney tomorrow!  Off to train!
